The 29th edition of the Salon international du livre d'Alger (SILA 2026) will take place from October 28 to November 7 at the Palais des Expositions des Pins Maritimes (SAFEX). Algerian author Zineb Ouannes will present her new fantasy series, "Bab El Mahroussa et les clés emprisonnées", published by Éditions Khayel. The series combines elements of adventure, legend, and fantasy, set in an imaginary Algeria where reality and fantasy blend.
The first volume of the series, "L'Élu", introduces readers to Slimane Srir, a young Algerian from the Casbah, and Krishma Chakour, a young Indian woman living in Algeria. Their story is one of love, cultural exchange, and self-discovery. Slimane teaches Krishma about Algerian culture, including the darija language and traditional music. In return, Krishma shares her Indian heritage with Slimane.
As the story unfolds, Slimane and Krishma face a separation that propels them into a world of fantasy. Krishma becomes trapped in a mysterious "sortilège du miroir" and Slimane must embark on a quest to rescue her. He is joined by a mysterious old woman who guides him through seven challenges to retrieve seven keys. This journey takes Slimane from Algeria to India, passing through several countries and cultural spaces.
The series is deeply rooted in Algerian culture and heritage, with the Casbah serving as a central setting. Ouannes' writing style blends Arabic and darija, creating a unique narrative voice. The story is full of enigmas and puzzles, inviting readers to engage actively with the text. The fantasy elements are balanced with a sense of mystery and adventure, rather than horror.
Ouannes' work is characterized by its poetic and imaginative storytelling. Her writing is inspired by Algerian culture, history, and music. The series aims to dialogue with different traditions while maintaining a strong Algerian identity. The Casbah is not just a picturesque backdrop but a living, breathing space filled with history, music, and characters.
