Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf has emphasized his country's commitment to supporting the stability and development of the Sahel region. Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Attaf stated that Algeria will continue to accompany Sahel countries in addressing security and development challenges. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach that includes security, development, and reconciliation.
Attaf outlined Algeria's approach to the Sahel region, which focuses on supporting the security of countries in the region, accompanying their development efforts, and encouraging reconciliation and dialogue. He stressed that Algeria's approach prioritizes respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, as well as the choices of their populations. The minister noted that the Sahel region is a single entity where security, development, and stability are interconnected.
The Algerian minister also addressed the situation in Libya, which has been in crisis for 16 years. Attaf considered that the prolonged crisis in Libya is an example of how deepening divisions can hinder finding a solution, and instead, emphasized the need for dialogue, reconciliation, and unification of institutions. He reaffirmed Algeria's support for a peaceful and comprehensive solution led by Libyans themselves.
Attaf expressed Algeria's commitment to supporting the legitimate authorities in Yemen and Sudan, which are striving to respond to the aspirations of their populations for security, stability, unity, and brotherhood. He also highlighted the importance of ending foreign interventions in the region, which he believes is essential for creating conditions conducive to resolving the crisis and building a unified and stable Libya.
The minister emphasized that building peace is not possible without development, and similarly, development cannot be revitalized without security and stability. Under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria has chosen to be an active player in global transformations, rather than just a recipient. The country has opted to turn challenges into opportunities for progress.
Attaf noted that Algeria has made sustainable development one of its national priorities, enshrined in its constitution since 2020. The country's approach is based on social justice, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability, with a clear and firm principle: no one should be left behind, and no Algerian should be excluded from the national development journey.
Finally, Attaf called for a balanced and responsible international organization of artificial intelligence, ensuring fair access to its benefits, preserving state sovereignty, and making this revolution a shared opportunity rather than a privilege for a few.
