The registration and pre-registration process for new baccalaureate holders in Algeria began on July 22, marking the start of the university admissions process for the 2019-2020 academic year. This process, which will run until September 12, is a crucial step for students seeking to enroll in higher education institutions across the country. According to the Ministry of National Education, the success rate in the 2019 baccalaureate exam was 54.56%, which could lead to an increase in university enrollment.
A new ministerial circular, issued on June 18, outlines the general rules for pre-registration and orientation of new baccalaureate holders. The circular defines the procedures for students to follow, including the exploitation of baccalaureate results and the determination of minimum national averages required to participate in certain fields. To facilitate the process, open days were organized at higher education institutions from July 15 to 23, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the various programs and requirements.
The pre-registration period for baccalaureate holders was initially set from July 22 to 24. This was followed by a confirmation phase from July 25 to 26 and a treatment of wishes phase from July 27 to August 3. The results of the allocations will be announced on August 3. Students who are not satisfied with their allocations will have the opportunity to reorient themselves during the second phase, which runs from August 4 to 17.
The second phase of the admissions process involves confirmation, reorientation, and tests-interviews for concerned fields from August 4 to 8. The opening of the "Accommodation, Scholarship, and Transportation" portal is also scheduled during this period, from August 8 to 17. Students who fail the tests-interviews or request reorientation can appeal during the period from August 14 to 17, with the results of the allocations to be announced on August 17.
The third phase of the admissions process, which runs from September 2 to 8, concerns definitive registrations and the files of university works. During this period, students will finalize their enrollment and complete the necessary administrative tasks. The fourth and final phase, from September 2 to 12, will focus on the treatment of particular cases and the reopening of the "Accommodation, Scholarship, and Transportation" portal.
According to La Dépêche de Kabylie, over 265,000 new students joined universities in Algeria during the 2018-2019 academic year. With the success rate in the 2019 baccalaureate exam, the number of new students is expected to exceed 300,000 in the upcoming academic year. This increase in enrollment is likely to put pressure on university infrastructure and resources.
The Algerian Ministry of National Education and the universities are working to ensure a smooth transition for new students. The authorities have put in place a structured process to manage the large number of applicants and ensure that students are allocated to their preferred fields of study. The process is expected to conclude by September 12, marking the beginning of the new academic year.
