Algeria's Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kouther Kriko, and Elias Zerrouni, coordinator of the High Council of the National Scientific Diaspora Abroad, have agreed to form a specialized task force to support environmental projects in the country. The task force will provide technical and scientific expertise from Algerian diaspora experts. The agreement was reached during a meeting at the ministry's headquarters in Algiers.

The meeting discussed ways to leverage the scientific and technical expertise of the Algerian diaspora to support and enrich sectoral projects, particularly in areas such as circular economy, biodiversity, pollution control, and climate change mitigation. Kriko showcased several projects overseen by her ministry, including the valorization of saltwater from seawater desalination plants and water treatment.

Kriko stated that the task force is part of the implementation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's instructions to involve Algerian diaspora experts in supporting sectoral projects, especially those with a technical nature. The meeting provided an opportunity to explore mechanisms for exchanging expertise and providing scientific and technical support to these projects.

The minister highlighted a project to design a national platform to catalog around 27,000 species, with the aim of identifying and protecting endangered species. She also reviewed proactive measures taken by her ministry, in coordination with the Agriculture Ministry, to protect and develop these species.

Kriko expressed interest in the possible contribution of the National Scientific Diaspora Council to supporting these efforts and leveraging the expertise of diaspora experts in this field. The council's coordinator, Zerrouni, was present during the meeting, along with the council's Secretary-General, Mustafa Khyati, and several members.

The agreement between Kriko and Zerrouni aims to strengthen collaboration between the government and the Algerian diaspora in addressing environmental challenges. By tapping into the expertise of diaspora experts, Algeria hopes to accelerate the implementation of its environmental projects and improve their effectiveness.

The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on Algeria's environmental sector, particularly in areas such as biodiversity conservation, pollution control, and climate change mitigation. The task force is set to play a key role in supporting the country's environmental projects and promoting sustainable development.
