Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently chaired a Council of Ministers meeting, where he directed that promised salary increases be included in the 2027 Finance Law. This move aims to support the Algerian people, particularly the middle class and those with modest incomes. The President emphasized that no new taxes should be imposed that would negatively affect citizens' purchasing power.

The Council of Ministers meeting also covered several other key topics, including an agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the construction of a section of the El Meniaa-In Salah-Tamanrasset railway line. Additionally, the meeting addressed the project to build a station in the Moulay Lahcen-Tamanrasset section of the same railway line. The President approved the 2027 Finance Law project, which is expected to drive growth and development in the country.

President Tebboune also reviewed the 2026 cereal harvest and the implementation of conclusions from joint commissions and bilateral agreements with Niger and Chad. He expressed satisfaction with the strong relations between Algeria, Niger, and Chad, despite attempts at destabilization. The President ordered close monitoring of all projects in these countries, particularly in energy, education, healthcare, and communications sectors.

The President instructed the Prime Minister to coordinate with his counterparts in Niger and Chad to ensure effective action and tangible progress. He emphasized the importance of accelerating project implementation, especially in the public works sector. The President set a target to complete the entire project by the end of 2028, enabling Algerians to travel by train from north to south, up to Tamanrasset.

Following the AfDB's financing approval for the El Meniaa-Tamanrasset railway section, President Tebboune charged the Minister of Public Works with conveying his gratitude and encouragement to sector workers, praising their exceptional work. He noted that they are on the verge of achieving a long-held dream of the Algerian people, which has eluded generations since independence.

Before closing the Council of Ministers meeting, President Tebboune approved a presidential decree integrating the charter of the Green Initiative for the Middle East, adopted in Riyadh. He also requested a special Council of Ministers meeting focused on the agricultural sector. This move follows recent discussions between Algerian Environment Minister Kaouter Krikou and the Secretary General of the Green Initiative for the Middle East, Ibrahim Al-Turki.

The integration of the Green Initiative for the Middle East charter is seen as a step towards enhancing cooperation and addressing environmental challenges in the region. Algeria has expressed its commitment to the initiative, which aims to intensify cooperation among countries to tackle issues such as climate change, desertification, and biodiversity loss. The country is expected to work closely with Saudi Arabia and other regional partners to drive sustainable development.
