The Algerian province of Khenchela has set a target to cultivate 80,188 hectares of land for grain production in the 2026-2027 season. The local authorities have made necessary arrangements to support farmers, including providing seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. This move comes after the region achieved a record production of over 1 million quintals of grain in the previous season. The authorities are optimistic about achieving an even higher production this season.

According to the Director of Agricultural Services in Khenchela, Said Tamen, the region has made significant progress in preparing for the new season. He stated that the authorities have taken all necessary measures to ensure a successful harvest, including coordinating with relevant agencies and stakeholders. The region has also made efforts to improve the technical and field support for farmers, which is expected to boost production.

The region has allocated 2799 tractors, 8509 plowing machines, 214 sowing machines, and 1182 fertilizer spreaders to support farmers. As of now, 25.59% of the target area has been plowed, which translates to 20,517 hectares. Out of this, 18,000 hectares are in the southern region of the province. The authorities are confident that the current season will see a higher production than the previous season.

In the previous season, Khenchela produced a record 1,067,411 quintals of grain, with an average yield of 25.51 quintals per hectare. This was an increase from the 989,257 quintals produced in the previous season. The region is optimistic about achieving an even higher production this season, given the favorable conditions and support from the authorities.

To support farmers, the authorities have organized field trips to ensure the availability of seeds and other inputs. The authorities have also taken steps to decentralize the distribution of seeds, which will help reduce transportation costs and make it easier for farmers to access the necessary inputs. This move is part of the government's efforts to support farmers and improve agricultural production.

The Agricultural Services Directorate has also organized training sessions for farmers on soil sampling and analysis. The training, which was conducted in collaboration with the local agricultural chamber and other stakeholders, aimed to equip farmers with the necessary skills to optimize their production. The authorities believe that such initiatives will go a long way in improving agricultural productivity in the region.

In a related development, the authorities have initiated a process to identify the needs of farmers for agricultural equipment, including tires. The exercise, which is part of a national initiative, aims to support farmers by providing them with the necessary equipment to improve their productivity. The authorities are optimistic that such initiatives will help improve agricultural production in the region and contribute to the country's overall food security.
