The Algerian Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure has announced significant progress on the Annaba phosphate port extension project. The project involves constructing a mining quay on an 82-hectare site. According to the ministry, various construction sites show steady progress in piling, filling, soil consolidation, and concrete structures. The project is a crucial part of Algeria's plan to export phosphate.
The piling works, a fundamental operation in the project, are advancing rapidly. To date, 1,092 piles have been completed out of a total of 1,322 planned, with 7 to 10 piles installed daily. Meanwhile, superstructure works on the quay wall are ongoing, with 88 reinforced concrete beams and 880 prefabricated concrete slabs realized. Preparations are underway for pouring the upper slab concrete, which will form the quay's framework.
Filling operations behind and beneath the quay using marine sand have made significant progress. The volume of fill material at the rear platform has reached approximately 1.5 million cubic meters, while the total fill volume has exceeded 2.5 million cubic meters. Additionally, dynamic compaction of sandy soils is ongoing to improve their geotechnical characteristics and enhance their bearing capacity.
The project also involves dumping and placing rocks and stone blocks by trucks to support maritime works related to extending the old dike. Around 4.2 million tons of stones have been placed out of a total of 5.5 million tons planned, alongside rock blocks and heavy concrete masses to ensure the required protection against waves and sea currents.
Dredging works aimed at achieving the required depths, particularly in the basin, where the target is 16 meters below sea level, have extracted 10.6 million cubic meters out of the 13 million cubic meters planned. This project is a vital link in the integrated phosphate project, which aims to transport ore extracted from Tébessa to Annaba for export via the Eastern mining railway currently under construction.
The Annaba phosphate port project is a key component of Algeria's phosphate export plan. The President of the Republic has ordered the launch of exports of enriched phosphate shipments from the integrated project by March 2027. The project will enable Algeria to export phosphate to international markets, generating significant revenue for the country.
The successful completion of the Annaba phosphate port project will not only boost Algeria's economy but also create new job opportunities and stimulate growth in the region. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the local community and contribute to the country's economic development.
