Algeria has made significant progress in the 2026 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII), published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The country has gained four places in the overall ranking compared to the 2025 edition, demonstrating notable progress in several components of its national innovation system.
The most remarkable results were recorded in the "Education" indicator, part of the "Human Capital and Research" pillar. Algeria now ranks third globally among 139 countries evaluated, with a score of 81.2 points. This performance marks a significant improvement compared to the 2025 edition, where Algeria ranked 93rd with a score of 43.2.
In addition to its ranking in the "Education" indicator, Algeria also secured the second global position in indicators related to education expenditure and public funding per student in secondary education. This achievement reflects the country's efforts to prioritize education and provide adequate resources for its development.
The Ministry of National Education expressed its deep gratitude to the President of the Republic for the particular attention and constant support given to the education and teaching sector. This recognition highlights the importance of continued investment in education to drive Algeria's progress in the GII.
The Global Innovation Index is an annual publication by WIPO that serves as an international benchmark for measuring the creative and scientific vitality of nations. The index evaluates 139 countries' ability to transform their resources into future solutions, using over 80 indicators divided into two main categories: inputs and outputs.
The GII assesses the institutional framework, research quality, infrastructure, and education financing, as well as the direct impact of these investments, including the number of patents filed, scientific output, high technology, and the dynamism of the start-up market. By distinguishing between promises and real progress, the GII provides policymakers with a strategic orientation tool to target their reforms.
Climbing the international GII ranking signals enhanced attractiveness and a successful transition towards a knowledge-based economy for Algeria. The country's progress in the education sector is a significant step towards achieving this goal, and continued efforts are expected to drive further improvements in the GII rankings.
