The Algerian Ministry of National Education has initiated the process of accepting applications for early retirement for employees in the education sector, as per the provisions of Executive Decree 26-74 dated January 14, 2026. This decree outlines the conditions and modalities for employees in the education sector to benefit from early retirement. The process will continue until December 31, 2026.

The early retirement process is applicable to employees in specific categories, including teachers, professors, school principals, and inspectors. According to Article 02 of the decree, employees in these categories can request early retirement starting from the age of 57 for men and 52 for women. To be eligible, employees must have been actively working at the time of submitting their application.

Article 03 of the decree states that employees must meet the legal requirements for retirement, including being actively employed when submitting their application. Article 04 of the decree specifies that applications must be submitted to the relevant education directorate during the first three months of the academic year, i.e., between October 1 and December 31.

The introduction of early retirement for education sector employees aims to renew the sector's workforce by allowing experienced teachers to retire early and making way for young, qualified professionals. The Ministry of National Education had previously cancelled the early retirement scheme in January 2016, but reinstated it in response to demands from education sector unions.

The early retirement scheme is part of a broader effort to modernize the education sector and address the needs of employees. The Ministry of National Education had, on a special basis, opened the door for early retirement applications in February 2026, with a deadline for submission on March 15, 2026.

Employees who opt for early retirement will vacate their positions on August 31, 2027, ensuring a smooth transition and stability in the education sector. The Ministry will determine its human resource needs after processing the early retirement applications and proceed with a new recruitment competition to fill the vacant positions.

The early retirement process is expected to bring about positive changes in the education sector, allowing for the integration of young and qualified professionals and providing a better learning environment for students. The Ministry of National Education remains committed to ensuring the well-being of its employees while addressing the needs of the sector.
