Algeria's Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Maritime Fishing, Ali Khaldi, emphasized the need for a comprehensive effort to ensure the success of the 2026-2027 agricultural season. This involves providing effective support to farmers and ensuring the availability of necessary inputs to increase production and improve yields. The minister made these remarks during a meeting with provincial agricultural service directors in Algiers.
Khaldi highlighted that achieving the goals set for the new agricultural season requires intensifying guidance and technical support for farmers. This includes providing seeds, fertilizers, machinery, equipment, and financing. Additionally, the minister stressed the importance of expanding cultivated areas, particularly for grain production, and introducing new wheat varieties.
The minister outlined that the objectives for the upcoming season include creating a detailed agricultural map of the country. This aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's instructions to develop a national agricultural policy based on precise scientific data. Khaldi also emphasized the need to focus on quality and increasing yields per hectare by controlling the technical process and improving seed and fertilizer quality.
Khaldi announced the launch of a comprehensive survey of unused land. He described the current situation, where large areas of agricultural land remain unexploited annually, as unacceptable. These lands will be integrated into the national agricultural data system. The survey aims to identify and utilize available land, particularly in the southern regions, to boost national production.
The minister highlighted that President Tebboune has made food security a top national priority. He noted that Algeria has significant assets, including fertile land, agricultural expertise, and a robust administrative and technical framework, which enable the country to address food security challenges.
Khaldi also discussed financing for agricultural activities. He announced the continuation of the supplier credit system for farmers affected by climate conditions. Furthermore, the minister revealed plans to hold weekly meetings to monitor loan files and address obstacles. The government will also intensify awareness campaigns on the importance of agricultural insurance.
The comprehensive land survey and efforts to support farmers are part of Algeria's broader strategy to enhance food security and agricultural production. The government's initiatives aim to leverage the country's resources and capabilities to achieve self-sufficiency in food production and reduce reliance on imports.
