Algerian Health Minister, Mohamed Sidik Ait Mesoudan, announced the inclusion of 52 innovative treatments in the national therapeutic arsenal to expand options for cancer patients, particularly in targeted and immunological treatments. This move aims to enhance cancer care in the country. The minister made this announcement during the opening of the second international conference for cancer patients.
The conference, held under the patronage of the President of the Republic, was organized by the Algerian Federation of Cancer Patient Associations in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Minister Ait Mesoudan emphasized that combating cancer is a national issue requiring a comprehensive approach that goes beyond treatment to include prevention, early detection, diagnosis, scientific research, and innovation.
According to the National Cancer Registry, Algeria recorded over 56,000 new cases in 2023, marking a 34% increase in less than a decade. The minister stressed the importance of ensuring patients receive timely and quality treatment. To improve therapeutic capabilities, Algeria currently has 15 cancer treatment centers, 24 radiation therapy centers, and 61 linear accelerators.
The Algerian government has allocated over 73 billion dinars to the Cancer Control Fund as part of the national initiative to combat cancer. The fund's resources are supplemented annually by 40 billion dinars, in addition to state budget allocations. Furthermore, the financial allocations for targeted cancer medications have been increased to 40 billion dinars in 2026.
Minister Ait Mesoudan highlighted the significance of digitalization in improving patient care by continuing the implementation of electronic medical records and digitalizing treatment appointments and pathways. This aims to reduce waiting times and enhance coordination among healthcare providers.
The pharmaceutical sector in Algeria has made notable progress, with 11 pharmaceutical companies producing anti-cancer medications and 172 local products available. The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouidri, announced the adoption of a "green channel" to expedite the registration of anti-cancer medications, particularly those manufactured locally.
The Algerian government is committed to enhancing cancer care and research, with ongoing efforts to develop innovative treatments and improve patient outcomes. The introduction of new treatments and substantial funding reflects the country's dedication to addressing the growing challenge of cancer.
