The 22nd edition of the Dried Fig Festival in Béjaïa, Algeria, is currently underway, featuring 220 exhibitors representing 32 provinces. The event, which runs until October 10, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the festival's founding in 1996. According to Omar Bakkouche, Secretary-General of the Béjaïa Dried Fig Producers Association, 90% of the exhibition space is dedicated to dried figs, while the remaining area showcases local products and handicrafts from across the country.

This year's edition is notable for the participation of a large number of exhibitors, with Bakkouche expressing pride in the wide representation of producers. The festival also marks the 30th anniversary of the event, which has become a significant platform for promoting Algeria's dried fig production. The dried fig is a major agricultural product in the Béjaïa region, with the area's unique climate and soil conditions making it an ideal place for cultivation.

A total of 23 local dried fig producers have obtained the "Béni Meouche" geographical indication label, issued by the Technical Institute for Fruit Tree and Vine Cultivation in Sidi Aïch. This label, which was introduced in 2016, represents a significant added value for the region's dried figs and contributes to their enhanced reputation in the national market. The label is a testament to the quality and distinctiveness of Béni Meouche's dried figs.

According to Mohamed Ben Taïba Ben Qlaouz, Director of Agriculture in Béjaïa, the province has 7,770 hectares dedicated to fig cultivation, producing approximately 148,000 quintals annually. The sector has seen significant growth in recent years, with 25,000 hectares of new fig trees planted in 2024 and 2025. A new program for planting fig trees is set to begin in October 2026, aiming to further boost production and support local farmers.

The festival also includes a scientific program, featuring expert presentations on topics such as fig tree monitoring and health protection, as well as biological control of diseases. Additionally, a cooking competition titled "The Art of Fig" aims to highlight dishes prepared using fresh and dried figs, a staple product in the region. The event provides a platform for producers, experts, and enthusiasts to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Béjaïa region.

The 21st edition of the festival, held previously, attracted 160 exhibitors from ten provinces. This year's event has seen a significant increase in participation, demonstrating the growing importance of the festival and the dried fig sector in Algeria. The festival's organizers have made efforts to support local farmers, particularly those affected by recent fires, by providing a platform for them to showcase their products and connect with potential buyers.

The Béjaïa region is renowned for its high-quality dried figs, which are a major contributor to the local economy. The festival serves as a celebration of the region's rich agricultural heritage and provides an opportunity for producers to promote their products and connect with consumers. With its unique blend of tradition, culture, and innovation, the Dried Fig Festival has become an essential event in Algeria's agricultural calendar.
