Algeria is set to expand its cement exports to new markets in Africa, Asia, America, and the Caribbean, as part of efforts to increase exports and diversify external markets. This move follows a call from Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Professor Kamal Razik, to enhance the presence of national products and capitalize on Algeria's production capacity and competitive advantages. The country's cement industry has made significant strides in recent years, enabling it to meet domestic demand and target international markets.

Algeria's cement sector currently boasts a production capacity of 30-42 million tons per year, while domestic consumption stands at 21-24 million tons. This leaves a surplus of 15-18 million tons available for export, comprising cement and clinker. According to economic expert Abdelhakim Bouharb, the country's cement exports currently stand at around 10 million tons per year. The industry has undergone significant development, with exports growing rapidly since 2020, particularly with the entry of major complexes such as the state-owned "Jica" and "Lafarge Holcim Algeria".

The period between 2024 and 2026 saw Algeria's cement exports reach a peak of 10 million tons per year, with shipments destined for diverse markets including the United States, France, Italy, and West Africa. This development marks a significant shift, as Algeria previously relied on importing cement despite having the necessary resources and capabilities to produce it. In 2015, imports stood at 6.6 million tons, decreasing to 4.8 million tons in 2016, before the government announced a halt on cement imports in 2018.

Algeria is currently home to 22 cement factories and production units spread across the country, which has contributed to increased production capacity and met domestic demand. This capacity enables Algerian products to expand their presence in external markets and boost export volumes in the coming phase. Bouharb emphasized that the growth of the sector can be attributed to the presence of effective complexes and factories that have increased production levels and expanded their capacities.

The growth of Algeria's cement industry is driven by various factors, including the modernization and expansion of factories, particularly state-owned ones, which have helped maintain the sector's competitiveness. Additionally, Algeria's geological advantages allow for the provision of raw materials, such as limestone, at competitive prices, as well as access to energy at a lower cost. The quality of raw materials also plays a crucial role in the competitiveness of Algerian cement.

Algeria is currently focusing on developing "green cement" or low-carbon cement, particularly for markets with stricter environmental regulations, such as Europe and America. The African market presents a significant opportunity for Algerian cement, given the substantial gap between supply and demand. Bouharb views the African market as a promising outlet for Algerian cement exports, driven by the continent's infrastructure development needs.

The expansion of Algeria's cement exports is expected to contribute to the country's economic growth and provide an alternative revenue stream. With its considerable production capacity and competitive advantages, Algeria is poised to become a major player in the global cement market. The country's cement industry is anticipated to continue growing, driven by ongoing investments and modernization efforts.
