Algerian Energy and Renewable Energies Minister, Merad Ajal, emphasized on Monday in Oran that Algeria is counting on developing renewable hydrogen and constructing an integrated national value chain in this field. This move is expected to boost the country's industrial and technological capabilities and support its transition towards a more sustainable energy system. Ajal made these remarks during the opening of the 14th edition of the Africa and Mediterranean Energy and Hydrogen Fair and Conference, "Nabac 2026".
Ajal highlighted that developing hydrogen requires investment in various segments of the value chain, including energy production, equipment manufacturing, electrolysis, hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. He stressed the importance of investing in research, development, innovation, and training to enhance national capacities and control the technologies associated with hydrogen. This, he believes, will create a new industrial and technological dynamic.
The minister underscored the strategic importance of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor, which connects North Africa to Europe, as a lever for regional and Euro-Mediterranean integration. This project aims to enhance energy security and diversification, he noted. Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany signed the "Algiers Ministerial Declaration" on October 1, related to this project.
Ajal also mentioned the Algeria-Europe Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A) project, stating that the initial results of its feasibility study are expected to be released in 2027. He encouraged partnerships and cooperation to drive progress in the hydrogen sector. The minister's statements reflect Algeria's ambition to become a significant player in the hydrogen market.
Algeria's efforts to develop its hydrogen sector align with its broader energy transition goals. The country aims to increase its renewable energy capacities and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. By investing in hydrogen, Algeria seeks to diversify its energy mix and capitalize on its existing expertise in the energy sector.
The 14th edition of the Africa and Mediterranean Energy and Hydrogen Fair and Conference, "Nabac 2026", brings together experts and stakeholders to discuss the latest developments and opportunities in the energy and hydrogen sectors. The event provides a platform for countries to share their experiences and best practices in the field.
Algeria's commitment to developing renewable hydrogen and building a national value chain is part of its strategy to achieve sustainable economic growth and reduce its environmental footprint. The country's progress in this area will be closely watched by regional and international partners.
