Algeria and Spain have taken a significant step towards strengthening their cooperation in the red meat sector. On Monday, October 6, 2026, two agreements were signed in Algiers between Algerian and Spanish organizations. The agreements were signed on the sidelines of a bilateral meeting under the theme "Unite markets, strengthen the sector." The first agreement was signed between the Algerian Red Meat Company (ALVIAR) and Spanish organizations INTEROVIC and PROVACUNO.
The second agreement was signed between INTEROVIC, PROVACUNO, and the National Union of Red Meat Importers. The agreements aim to promote cooperation in the red meat sector, with a focus on exchanging information and experiences, improving animal breeds, and enhancing logistics. Mohamed Rezgui, President and General Director of ALVIAR, stated that the agreements would help strengthen the sector and improve the quality of red meat in Algeria.
The agreements come as Algeria prepares for the upcoming Ramadan month. Rezgui emphasized that the AGROLOG group, which ALVIAR is a part of, is taking all necessary measures to meet the demand for red meat during Ramadan. This is in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and in coordination with the Ministry of Trade. The group aims to ensure a stable supply of red meat during the holy month.
Sofiane Bahbou, spokesperson for the National Union of Algerian Red Meat Importers, highlighted that preparations for Ramadan began six months ago. He assured that all necessary quantities of red meat would be imported to avoid any shortages. Bahbou also emphasized that the partnership with Spanish operators would help modernize slaughterhouses and develop intensive livestock farming in the south of Algeria.
The Spanish ambassador to Algeria, Ramiro Fernandez Bachiller, expressed his country's desire to go beyond commercial exchanges and develop a sustainable bilateral cooperation in the livestock sector. He noted that Spain is Algeria's leading supplier of red meat and aims to strengthen its position. Cristina E. Olazabal Valiente, economic and commercial counselor at the Spanish embassy, recalled that Algeria is the first destination outside the European Union for Spanish beef exports.
The bilateral meeting concluded with B2B meetings between Algerian and Spanish economic operators. These meetings focused on exploring opportunities for cooperation and partnership in the red meat sector. The agreements and meetings demonstrate the commitment of both countries to strengthening their cooperation and promoting the development of the red meat sector in Algeria.
The cooperation agreements between Algeria and Spain are expected to have a positive impact on the red meat sector in Algeria. The agreements will help improve the quality and quantity of red meat available in the country, ensuring a stable supply for consumers. The partnership with Spanish operators will also help transfer technology and expertise to Algeria, contributing to the modernization of the sector.
