On the occasion of South Korea's National Day, Ambassador Min Kyung-tae reviewed the 20-year strategic partnership between Algeria and South Korea, highlighting the potential for renewed economic and technological cooperation. The ambassador emphasized the need to expand exchanges beyond traditional areas to include industry, energy, technology, digital transition, and education. The event was attended by Algerian Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki and other high-ranking officials.
Min Kyung-tae described Algeria and South Korea as "natural partners" despite their geographical and economic differences. He cited their successful collaboration at the UN Security Council during their joint mandate in 2024-2025, which strengthened diplomatic dialogue and common positions on international issues. The two countries have seen significant commercial growth, with Algeria becoming South Korea's top supplier of naphtha in the first half of the year, capturing 17.2% of the market.
The ambassador highlighted historical cooperation between South Korean companies and Algeria, particularly in the construction of power plants, port infrastructure, and new cities. He also showcased innovative agricultural projects, including shrimp farming in the Sahara and local production of certified potato seeds. These projects are expected to expand into industrial sectors such as automotive, energy, and digital transformation.
A key aspect of the renewed cooperation is the agreement signed in July to establish a direct air link between Algiers and Seoul. The ambassador believes this air bridge will facilitate the flow of people, ideas, and business, and has expressed his government's willingness to quickly implement this project. Strengthening university exchanges, vocational training, and Korean language learning were also emphasized.
Min Kyung-tae concluded his speech by emphasizing the importance of cultural rapprochement, stating that despite differences, the two countries can form a strong alliance. He used the metaphor of isolated threads that, when crossed, form a resilient fabric. The ambassador's words reflect the optimism and commitment of both nations to deepening their cooperation.
The cooperation between Algeria and South Korea has the potential to yield significant benefits, particularly in the areas of industry, energy, and technology. With Algeria's rich natural resources and South Korea's technological expertise, the two countries can complement each other and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. The direct air link and strengthened exchanges will facilitate the growth of bilateral relations.
As the two countries move forward with their ambitious cooperation projects, they are expected to explore new areas of collaboration, including crevetticulture and potato production in the Sahara. The success of these projects will depend on the commitment and cooperation of both nations, as well as the effective implementation of agreements and partnerships.
