The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade I, has urged politicians to eschew primordial sentiments and be more pragmatic in finding solutions to Nigeria's myriad problems. In a statement released to commemorate Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary, the monarch emphasized that national growth and development depend on the justice, moral worth, responsibility, conscientiousness, devotion to duty, selflessness, probity, and honesty exhibited by leaders and citizens alike.
According to Oba Owoade, a nation's value system is sacred and extends beyond its boundaries. He noted that all nations take pride in their value systems, just as individuals take pride in their upbringing and character. The monarch stressed that politicians must close ranks and brainstorm to arrive at an in-depth understanding of the contending state-building issues in the country.
Oba Owoade highlighted Nigeria's history, noting that the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates in 1914 brought together peoples of diverse historical and cultural backgrounds into one political space. He observed that despite the challenge of diversity, the colonial government demonstrated its commitment to ensuring unity through policies aimed at fostering cultural, political, social, and economic ties among various groups.
The Alaafin acknowledged the achievements of nationalists such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and the Sardauna of Sokoto in the First Republic, citing their contributions to education, infrastructure, employment, social welfare programs, and healthcare delivery. He argued that traditional institutions must be preserved and constitutionally recognized, citing Britain's example of preserving its traditional institution with the monarch as the ceremonial head of state.
Oba Owoade lamented that traditional institutions have faced challenges, being strengthened and weakened, elevated and humiliated, empowered and disempowered by the emergent political class from the pre-colonial era to the post-colonial period. He noted that traditional rulers were once recognized as political rulers, custodians of people's history, culture, religion, and economy, but their powers and relevance were reduced with the advent of colonial rule.
The monarch suggested that traditional institutions, which are remnants of Nigeria's pre-colonial political system, must be preserved, promoted, and strengthened through official constitutional recognition and acknowledgement. He emphasized that citizens, under the traditional influence of Obas, can be mobilized, advised, mediated, facilitated, adjudicated, and nominated, making their position as potent mobilizers and advisers invaluable.
Oba Owoade lauded President Bola Tinubu's administration for focusing on rebuilding and laying foundations for a sustainable country, noting that Nigeria can overcome its challenges if all work together. He expressed optimism that the country can surmount its avoidable levels of deprivation and achieve growth and development.
