Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has announced the launch of the sixth African Union commemoration of post-conflict reconstruction and development. For the first time, this initiative will be extended to a full month throughout November. The theme of this year's initiative is "Twenty Years of Building and Sustaining Peace: From Policy to Implementation." This commemoration coincides with the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the African Union's Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy.

As the African Union's champion for post-conflict reconstruction and development, Al-Sisi emphasized that post-conflict reconstruction should not be viewed solely as a humanitarian or economic undertaking. Instead, it should be seen as an integral component of Africa's peace and security architecture. This approach aims to address the root causes of fragility in societies emerging from conflict or instability. Al-Sisi's statement highlighted the importance of translating policy commitments into concrete programs and projects.

The initiative aims to assess progress, identify gaps, and prioritize initiatives that deliver tangible and immediate benefits to people's lives. Al-Sisi called for stronger support for the African Union Commission and the AU Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development in Cairo. He also urged increased funding for related programs to ensure the successful implementation of reconstruction efforts. Egypt will host the sixth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development at the end of November.

Al-Sisi stressed that reconstruction efforts should be guided by national priorities and the actual needs of affected communities. This approach will help address the underlying causes of conflict and strengthen coordination among governments, regional organizations, and international partners. The president also emphasized the importance of greater participation by young people, women, and the private sector in reconstruction efforts.

The private sector can play a significant role in reconstruction through investment, job creation, production, and infrastructure development. Al-Sisi reaffirmed his commitment to working with African leaders, the AU Commission, regional stakeholders, and international partners to promote stability, peace, and sustainable development. This effort aims to advance the objectives of the AU's Agenda 2063.

The commemoration comes ahead of the African Union's 25th anniversary in 2027. Al-Sisi's initiative seeks to strengthen the links between peace, security, and development, enhancing the implementation of the AU's reconstruction policy. By extending the commemoration to a full month, the initiative provides a platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and share best practices in post-conflict reconstruction.

The sixth African Union commemoration of post-conflict reconstruction and development serves as a timely reminder of the progress made so far and the challenges that lie ahead. As the African Union continues to work towards promoting peace, security, and sustainable development, initiatives like this one will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the continent.
