Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno has reiterated his commitment to respecting his predecessors, particularly Deacon Udom Emmanuel. The clarification comes amid rumours circulating on social media that Governor Eno had fallen out with his political godfather, Mr Udom Emmanuel.
The rumours gained traction after Governor Eno's response to a request by the Paramount Ruler of Onna Local Government Area, where Udom Emmanuel hails from, to intervene in some industries in the area that have folded up. During the commissioning of a 14km road, Governor Eno had stated that the intervention had nothing to do with his predecessor, but rather with the industries' owners.
Governor Eno explained that the word "Unadot", which has been trending in the state, is a simple Ibibio word meaning "people", not a euphemism to disparage his predecessor. He emphasized that his response was not a derogatory remark, as misunderstood by some persons, and warned mischief-makers to desist from attempting to cause a rift between him, his administration, and any past leader in the state.
The Governor made these clarifications during the second memorial service in honour of his departed wife and First Lady of the state, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno, at All Nations Christian Ministry International, Eket. He stated that his upbringing and orientation of respect will eternally live in him, ensuring that he never disrespects his predecessors or past leaders.
Governor Eno also highlighted that he had already stated that the government had no hand in the folded industries, and therefore, it was not right to jump into people's businesses without their invitation. He stressed that he never mentioned or had Udom Emmanuel in mind during his response, as the former governor is not a shareholder in the businesses.
In further clarification, Governor Eno referenced the Efik Hymn Book, Hymn No. 246, which contains the word "unadod", emphasizing that it is an Ibibio word that means "the people". He was simply referring to the people who own the businesses, not his predecessor.
Governor Eno concluded by stating that he will never have a problem with his predecessor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, and has shown both privately and publicly the respect he has for him. The Governor's remarks aim to put to rest the rumours of a rift and reaffirm his commitment to maintaining a positive relationship with his predecessors.
