Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has assured that he will never disrespect his immediate predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, or any past governor and leader in the state. This statement was made during the second memorial service in honour of his late wife, Patience, held at All Nations Christian Ministry International in Eket Local Government Area. Eno emphasized that his upbringing is rooted in respect, a value that will remain with him eternally.
The governor's comments come amid misinterpretations of his response to a request by the Paramount Ruler of Onna LGA, who appealed for intervention in some moribund industries, including the syringe factory and flour mill. Eno clarified that his Ibibio response, using the word "Unadot," simply means "people" and is not derogatory. He stated that he was referring to the people who own the businesses, not his predecessor.
Governor Eno stressed that his statement had nothing to do with Udom Emmanuel, noting that the government has no shares in the factories and cannot jump into private businesses without invitation. He mentioned that he never had Udom Emmanuel in mind during his response and that it didn't connect to him because he is not a shareholder in that business.
Eno further explained that the Ibibio word "Unadot" is not derogatory, citing its use in the Efik Hymn Book, Hymn No. 246. He emphasized that he will never have a problem with his predecessor, having shown both privately and publicly the respect he has for Deacon Udom Emmanuel.
During the memorial service, Governor Eno paid tribute to his late wife, describing her as a woman whose life was woven into the fabric of their family and whose legacy will endure forever. He recalled their 40-year union as one built on companionship, love, and faith.
Eno commended his daughter, Helen Eno-Obareki, for authoring a book in honour of her mother titled "The Patience to Build: Lessons from my Mother." Patience's death was announced by the state Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, on September 26, 2024, at a hospital surrounded by family members.
Governor Eno's pledge to respect his predecessor and past leaders is seen as a move to foster unity and cooperation in the state. His commitment to upholding the values of respect and his clarification on the misinterpreted comments aim to promote a positive and harmonious working relationship with his predecessors and other stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State.
