The Akonta Foundation, led by Torgbui Tenuvi II, Youth and Development Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, has initiated a sports equipment project aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development in the Ketu South Municipality. The project, set to commence in October 2026, will provide 300 sets of jerseys and 300 footballs to 100 basic schools. This initiative seeks to address equipment challenges in schools and create opportunities to identify and develop young talents.

Torgbui Tenuvi announced that each of the 100 schools will receive three sets of jerseys and three footballs to support their Boys Under-13, Girls Under-15, and Boys Under-15 teams. He emphasized the importance of grassroots sports at the basic school level, citing its role in discovering talents, promoting physical well-being, and instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience in young people.

Torgbui Tenuvi highlighted his previous investments in various sports, including handball, basketball, volleyball, and athletics at both basic and senior high school levels. He stressed that football remains a crucial sport requiring support from private organizations and non-governmental organizations. He advocated for private sector partnerships to provide equipment, sponsorship, and structured youth programs, while the Government and local assemblies complement these efforts through additional funding and improved sports facilities.

The Akonta Foundation's initiative aims to address logistical challenges faced by schools, particularly in securing suitable jerseys for their teams, which can affect the morale of young athletes. Torgbui Tenuvi noted that the project is timely, as Ketu South prepares to host the 56th Inter-District Sports Festival in 2027. The equipment will assist schools in their preparations for the event.

A centralized handing-over ceremony is expected to be held later in October, with sports prefects, school heads, and officials of the Ketu South Municipal Education Directorate in attendance. The Akonta Foundation had earlier supported Ketu South's participation in the 55th Inter-District Sports Festival with GH¢10,000, delivered through Mr. Ferguson Ahorlu to Mr. Stanley Kwawuvi, Sports Coordinator for the Ketu South Municipality.

The contribution was intended to support the Municipality's participation in the festival, held at the Akatsi Senior High Technical School from August 15 to 21, 2026. Ketu South won the overall championship title in 2025 after securing four of the eight trophies at the competition. Torgbui Tenuvi stated that the earlier contribution was to support the young athletes in their bid to defend the Municipality's overall championship title.

Torgbui Tenuvi called for collective efforts to address challenges confronting communities while awaiting complementary support from the Government. The Akonta Foundation's sports equipment project is expected to have a positive impact on grassroots sports development in the Ketu South Municipality.
