The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has cautioned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could lead to shocks in financial markets. According to a report by the BBC, Bailey stated that the central bank is closely monitoring the significant investments being made in AI. He noted that not all companies investing in AI would be successful, warning that asset prices of some companies could fall. Bailey cited the example of Google not being the first market leader in internet search, but ultimately becoming the dominant player.

Bailey emphasized that AI has great potential to boost economic growth, but it also comes with serious risks. He stated that the Bank of England is keeping a close eye on the large sums of money flowing into AI companies. For instance, AI chipmaker Nvidia has become the world's most valuable listed company, with a market value of $5.5 trillion. Bailey expressed concerns that the huge amounts of money being loaned to AI firms could lead to market volatility if the big bets being made on AI do not pay off as investors expect.

The Bank of England Governor also highlighted the risks associated with AI being used to carry out cyber attacks. He described AI as a powerful tool for finding weaknesses in computer systems, which could be exploited by malicious actors. Bailey noted that AI has revealed hidden problems in software that many organizations have relied on for years, creating a much more powerful way of uncovering vulnerabilities. He warned that in the wrong hands, AI could become a very dangerous tool.

Bailey raised concerns about deep fakes, saying AI-generated images and videos could be used to deceive the public. He shared a personal experience of fake images of him and a public figure in a fight being shared on social media. Bailey stated that the Bank has struggled to trace the origin of the fake images and called on the technology industry for help in tracking down the source of such content.

Despite the risks, Bailey acknowledged that AI also has clear benefits. He cited its ability to speed up work that supports interest rate decisions as an example. Bailey emphasized that AI is not making decisions but is a useful tool in the hands of policymakers. He expressed optimism about the potential of AI to strengthen economic growth, but also stressed the need for caution and vigilance.

Bailey noted that major tech companies such as Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on AI. He also mentioned that major AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, are preparing to sell shares on the United States stock market. Bailey stated that there is a very large amount of investment going into the AI sector, which is natural given its potential for growth.

The Bank of England Governor concluded by emphasizing the need for preparedness in the face of potential shocks to markets. He stated that the Bank is prepared for the fact that there will be some shocks to markets and is working to ensure that the system is resilient. Bailey called for collaboration with the tech sector to address the risks associated with AI and to harness its potential benefits.
