This technology can help bridge the information gap that affects farmers, particularly smallholder producers.
Experts, including Adrian Webb, a Lecturer in AI Ethics and Technology, note that AI-powered chatbots can provide quick responses to farmers' questions and offer information to support their decision-making. These chatbots can help farmers determine the best way to handle crop diseases, respond to changing weather conditions, and apply fertiliser correctly. Additionally, AI can help identify the best markets and prices for farm produce, enabling farmers to make informed decisions.
The application of AI in African agriculture should not stop at the farm, as it can also help tackle inefficiencies in the transportation and distribution of agricultural commodities. By analysing information on production, food movement, and market prices, AI can help identify where agricultural supply chains are breaking down. This transparency can enable goods to move more efficiently and reduce waste.
According to Webb, food losses can occur not due to production issues or farm problems but because produce becomes stranded within poorly organised supply chains. He notes that AI is well-suited to solving logistical problems and can help improve the use of AI in African agriculture. Efforts to ensure that farmers, particularly those in rural areas, can access and use the technology are crucial.
To make digital agricultural services accessible to farmers who might otherwise be left behind, agricultural ministries, development organisations, and groups working directly with rural communities will play an important role. Organisations such as the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) can use AI to bring agricultural information together and provide more effective support to farming communities.
Danette Copestake, another AI expert, emphasises that artificial intelligence should be viewed as a technology that enhances human abilities rather than one designed to make people redundant. She encourages women, including those working in agriculture, to take advantage of AI while ensuring that human judgment and critical thinking remain central to its use.
The experts agree that Africa's agricultural transformation will ultimately depend on combining AI's ability to analyse large amounts of information with the practical knowledge and experience of farmers and agricultural professionals. When deployed responsibly and inclusively, AI can support higher productivity, improve the movement of food, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen food security across the continent.
