The Pilex Centre for Civic Education Initiative has petitioned the Rivers State Magistrate's Court to order a coroner's inquest into the death of Joy Amos. Amos died from severe burn injuries sustained in a fire and explosion allegedly linked to gas leakage in Bille Community, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. The petitioner seeks an order for the exhumation of Amos' remains for forensic and post-mortem examination.

Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, Chairman of the Niger Delta Environmental Justice Lawyers' Network, stated that the inquest was necessary due to the unnatural circumstances of Amos' death. A coroner's inquest, conducted by magistrates, will investigate the causes of her death and provide evidence to address the matter at different levels. The inquest will examine several issues, including the source and cause of the alleged gas leakage and the nature and extent of Amos' injuries.

Amos died on September 21, 2026, at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, after receiving treatment for severe burn injuries sustained in the September 3 fire and explosion in Bille. The petitioner is seeking to determine whether the alleged gas leakage caused or contributed to the fire and explosion and whether any person, company, or entity bears responsibility for the incident.

The petition also requests that Amos' medical records be produced before the coroner, including her admission and treatment records, diagnosis, and laboratory results. This will help establish the medical cause of her death and determine whether her injuries contributed to or caused her death. The coroner's inquest will provide crucial information on the circumstances surrounding Amos' death.

The Niger Delta Environmental Justice Lawyers' Network has alleged that residents of Bille have lived with volatile gas seepages and hazardous emissions for over a year, despite warnings from community members and advocacy by civil society organizations. The group is using Amos' death to draw attention to the environmental challenges facing Bille and to call on presidential candidates to address these issues.

The Network has demanded an independent forensic investigation, identification and permanent sealing of the source of the gas seepage, and temporary relocation of affected residents. They also seek relief materials, emergency healthcare, environmental restoration, a health impact study for Bille Kingdom, and compensation for Amos' family and other affected residents. The coroner's inquest is a crucial step towards achieving these demands.

The petition and subsequent coroner's inquest may lead to significant actions against those responsible for the gas leakage and the resulting fire and explosion. The inquest's findings could also inform policy changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
