The Aga Khan University (AKU), a private, not-for-profit international university, is seeking a Finance Manager to lead its financial operations in Kampala, Uganda. The successful candidate will be responsible for financial management, construction project management, planning, budgeting, and reporting for AKU-Uganda and Aga Khan Health Service, Uganda. This position will be based in Kampala and is open to qualified professionals with a strong background in finance.
The Finance Manager will play a critical role in maintaining and implementing internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial records and credibility of information. The position holder will collaborate with various stakeholders to design, implement, and review finance systems, policies, and procedures. They will also ensure compliance with tax law, financial law, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as applicable in Uganda.
Key duties and responsibilities of the Finance Manager include financial management and control, supervision of monthly payroll, and preparation of financial statements. The successful candidate will work closely with HR on payroll matters, including timely payment to staff and statutory deductions. They will also supervise the preparation of contractor payments and related schedules for construction projects.
The Finance Manager will be responsible for planning, budgeting, and reporting, including preparation of annual budgets and 5-year rolling budgets for AKU-UG entities and AKHS, U. They will also prepare feasibility costing studies, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, and grant budgets in consultation with project leads or entity heads.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a professional accounting qualification, such as ACCA, CPA (U), or ACMA, and a bachelor's or master's degree in commerce, finance, accounting, or a related field. At least 5 years of relevant experience in financial management, planning, reporting, and budgeting are required, with experience in a university, hospital, or health services environment being an added advantage.
Strong knowledge of IFRS, corporate and tax laws, and proficiency in Microsoft Office, AI, and Business Intelligence (BI) tools are essential for this role. Excellent communication, leadership, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills are also required. The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple priorities and travel within the region as required.
