The African Union Commission has called on Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt to exercise "maximum restraint" in the face of rising tensions between the three countries. In a statement, the Commission expressed concern over the escalation and urged the states to avoid actions or statements that could further exacerbate tensions and compromise regional peace and stability.

The Commission emphasized the need to keep communication channels open and encouraged the parties to resolve their differences through established diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue, in line with the principles of the African Union's Constitutive Act. The organization also stated its readiness to support efforts towards de-escalation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution of disputes, in consultation with the concerned countries.

The tensions between the three countries are linked to several geopolitical disputes in the Horn of Africa, including Ethiopia's access to Red Sea ports, water resources related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and the evolution of military and security alliances in the region. These issues have long been a source of contention between the countries.

On the same day as the African Union's statement, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that an Egyptian embassy employee, Ahmed Moharam Ahmed Soliman, had been declared persona non grata and was required to leave the country within 48 hours. This move was seen as a further escalation of tensions between the two countries.

Ethiopia also decided to close its embassy in Asmara, Eritrea's capital, and declared ten Eritrean diplomats persona non grata. Eritrea responded by severing diplomatic relations with Ethiopia. These developments have raised concerns about the potential for conflict in the region.

The tensions come as fighting has resumed in northern Ethiopia between federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). The African Union's call for restraint is seen as an effort to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control and to promote a peaceful resolution to the disputes.

The situation in the Horn of Africa remains volatile, with the potential for conflict to spread beyond the borders of the three countries involved. The international community is watching closely, and the African Union's efforts to promote peace and stability are seen as crucial in preventing a wider crisis.
