The African Development Bank has released official documents and a stakeholder engagement plan for Mauritania's Nouakchott hybrid renewable energy project. The project aims to address short-term electricity production capacity deficits in the country. The bank stated that the total project cost is approximately 12 billion ouguiya, equivalent to $287 million. The project will be implemented in two main phases over 15 years under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Oil.

The Nouakchott hybrid power plant project is a strategic partnership between the Mauritanian government and West Africa Investment Company (IWA). The project involves developing, financing, building, and operating a hybrid renewable energy complex. IWA, a Mauritanian company specializing in energy and industry infrastructure in West Africa, will oversee the project. With experience in implementing structural projects in the energy sector, IWA aims to enhance energy security and support a transition to sustainable solutions.

The hybrid power plant will comprise a 160 MW solar photovoltaic plant and a 60 MW wind power plant with 12 turbines. The complex will also feature an advanced battery energy storage system with a capacity of 185 MW/370 MWh. A 33/225 kV substation will connect the plant to the national electricity grid, managed by the Société Mauritanienne d'Electricité (SOMELEC). The project site will cover approximately 1,000 hectares in Tognene, North Nouakchott.

The project aligns with Mauritania's national emergency plan to address short-term electricity production capacity deficits. The country's energy sector faces challenges, and the Nouakchott hybrid power plant project aims to provide a sustainable solution. The African Development Bank's involvement in the project demonstrates its commitment to supporting the development of renewable energy in Mauritania.

The partnership between the public and private sectors will enable the development of a hybrid renewable energy complex. This collaboration will not only increase electricity production capacity but also promote sustainable energy solutions in Mauritania. West Africa Investment Company (IWA) will play a crucial role in implementing the project and ensuring its long-term operation.

The African Development Bank's publication of the project's documents and stakeholder engagement plan demonstrates transparency and commitment to the project's success. The bank's involvement will help ensure that the project adheres to environmental and social standards. The Nouakchott hybrid power plant project is expected to have a positive impact on Mauritania's energy sector and contribute to the country's economic development.

The project's implementation is expected to create opportunities for local communities and promote economic growth. The African Development Bank's support for the project reflects its strategic objective of promoting sustainable and inclusive development in Africa. The Nouakchott hybrid power plant project will serve as a model for future renewable energy projects in the region.
