The African Development Bank has announced a $1 million grant from its Technical Assistance Fund for Middle-Income Countries to support a project aimed at promoting entrepreneurship in Libya. The project, titled "Private Sector Development and Entrepreneurship Enhancement," will be implemented by the Libyan National Council for Economic and Social Development in collaboration with the French Agency for International Technical Expertise.

The project aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises in Libya, with a focus on women and youth, by providing training and access to finance and support services. A total of 200 entrepreneurs will be trained in business planning, financial literacy, project management, pricing, and marketing, with women making up 40% of participants and youth accounting for 50%.

The project will also involve training 50 banking professionals in Islamic finance and small and medium-sized enterprise lending, in collaboration with at least four financial institutions and service providers. Additionally, the project will support the design of innovative microfinance products that respond to the needs of women and youth.

The project is part of Libya's efforts to diversify its economy, reduce its dependence on oil and gas, and expand job opportunities. According to the African Development Bank, Libya needs $37.2 billion annually to finance its infrastructure, energy, and education sectors.

The project will address several challenges facing the private sector in Libya, including limited access to finance, lack of business skills, and inadequate support services. It will also support the update of a roadmap and action plan for private sector development in Libya and improve coordination among institutions involved in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.

The project will provide support to at least five national institutions to enhance their capacities in monitoring, reporting, and integrating the priorities of women and youth into their programs and activities. The Libyan Credit Information Center will also receive support through training and system updates to improve the availability and quality of credit information.

The project aligns with the African Development Bank's strategy for Libya, which focuses on creating a favorable environment for reconstruction and economic diversification by promoting good governance and institutional capacity. The bank's support for entrepreneurship in Libya is expected to contribute to the country's economic growth and development.
