Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed that African banks have played a significant role in developing one of its core services. According to Tanuja Randery, AWS vice-president and MD for Europe, the Middle East & Africa, the company's cloud services have enabled customers across the globe, including Standard Bank and Absa Bank, to transform their operations and serve customers better. The development of Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2, in Cape Town, is a notable example of African innovation that has contributed to AWS's global cloud business.

The next stage of AWS's development in Africa is focused on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into customer operations. Randery stated that banks are using Connect, a platform for contact centres and customer interactions, to rethink the economics of their call centres. AI agents can plan and carry out transactions, making it essential for banks to consider both external regulators and their own customers' money. The use of AI in banking has the potential to drive more upsell and cross-sell opportunities, turning call centres into growth engines rather than cost centres.

Standard Bank is a prime example of a financial institution that has successfully integrated AI into its operations. The bank operates in multiple markets and has moved beyond isolated AI use cases into deployment at scale. More than 1,000 engineers use a combination of Amazon Bedrock and the Q developer assistant, which have doubled the speed at which the bank delivers solutions. This achievement is a testament to the bank's commitment to leveraging technology to drive innovation and growth.

Randery attributes Africa's early adoption of cloud technology to the continent's business leaders, who have directed the change from the executive suite. She notes that CEOs in Africa are more involved in the conversation about AI and its applications, which has led to a stronger focus on reimagining businesses. However, Randery also sees a clear divide between basic users of AI and advanced users who have governance, an executive strategy, direct participation by business heads, and staff training.

The use of AI in banking raises concerns about software quality and the potential for failures. Randery emphasizes the importance of having humans in the loop throughout the development process, including testing and quality assurance. She cites AWS's development of a new version of Bedrock, which was completed in 76 days by half-a-dozen people, as an example of the productivity gains that can be achieved through the use of AI and skilled people.

AWS is committed to investing in South African cloud infrastructure, with an expected expenditure of R46bn by 2029. Randery puts the current expenditure at about R15bn, which has enabled the company to develop its cloud region in Cape Town. The company expects to invest in local AI infrastructure, including graphics processing capacity and further Bedrock capabilities, to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
