Africa is poised to strengthen its financial markets with the upcoming launch of the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) on October 7, 2026, in Port Louis, Mauritius. This development follows the second Africa Annual Conference on Credit Ratings, convened by the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and partners. The conference aims to deepen debate on credit-rating systems, investment opportunities, access to finance, and sustainable development.

The African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) is expected to establish a continental rating institution that will improve access to reliable credit information and strengthen investor confidence in businesses operating across Africa. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will host a roundtable on “Strengthening Domestic Credit Rating Ecosystems to Unlock Corporate Investment in Africa.” This roundtable will target bottlenecks in domestic capital markets, including fragmented rating systems, divergent methodologies and scales, and the high cost of conventional assessments.

Domestic credit rating agencies provide market-specific risk assessments that guide investors and lenders in financing decisions. However, limited data availability, uneven regulatory frameworks, and costly assessments continue to constrain their reach, especially for firms seeking investment. The UNDP roundtable will explore practical ways to expand credible corporate credit-risk assessments without compromising analytical quality, independence, or institutional credibility.

Discussions at the UNDP roundtable will examine how technology, better data, and common standards can lower assessment costs, strengthen monitoring, and improve cross-border comparability of credit-risk information. A major focus will be on how credible assessments can translate into greater confidence among investors and lenders, ultimately improving businesses’ access to capital. Participants will include domestic and Africa-operating rating agencies, financial institutions, investors, securities exchanges, regulators, private-sector representatives, development partners, and multilateral banks.

The initiative builds on UNDP’s Africa Credit Ratings Initiative (ACRI), launched in 2024 with support from the Government of Japan. ACRI aims to strengthen African governments’ capacity to navigate sovereign credit-rating processes. Since its inception, ACRI has delivered technical assistance, advisory services, capacity-building programmes, a dedicated resource platform, and a community of practice, with more than 400 government officials across Africa participating in its activities.

The planned AfCRA launch, alongside the continental conference and UNDP roundtable, offers stakeholders a platform to assess how improved credit-risk assessment and more accessible financial information can support business expansion, capital mobilisation, and economic development. For African businesses seeking funding for growth, stronger domestic credit-rating systems could help close information gaps that often limit access to financing.

The launch of AfCRA and the related events have the potential to transform Africa’s financial landscape by enhancing credit-rating systems, improving access to finance, and fostering sustainable development. By bringing together various stakeholders, these initiatives can facilitate the sharing of knowledge, best practices, and innovative solutions to address the challenges facing Africa’s financial markets. Ultimately, this can contribute to increased investor confidence, improved access to capital, and accelerated economic growth across the continent.
