Historian and Private Legal Practitioner, Lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong, has stated that Africa has deviated from the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Speaking on the GTV breakfast show on September 21, 2026, Lawyer Frimpong said the current state of the continent does not reflect the ideals of unity, self-reliance, and economic independence that Nkrumah championed. He made these remarks on Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, observed annually on September 21 to mark the birthday of Ghana’s first President.
According to Lawyer Frimpong, Nkrumah’s vision of a united Africa, politically and economically independent, has been abandoned by successive African leaders. Instead, they have pursued fragmented national interests and over-reliance on foreign powers. He noted that Nkrumah’s call for African unity through a continental government and his push for industrialization and self-sufficiency remain relevant today but have not been pursued with the needed commitment.
Lawyer Frimpong rejected the description of Nkrumah as a dictator, arguing that it fails to appreciate the context in which he governed and his vision for Ghana and Africa. He explained that while Nkrumah took hardline decisions, including the Preventive Detention Act, those decisions aimed to protect the young nation from destabilization and neocolonial influences.
The historian called for a balanced assessment of Nkrumah’s legacy, acknowledging that like every leader, he had shortcomings, but insisting that his contributions far outweigh his flaws. He emphasized that some actions of subsequent governments, including military overthrows, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement, were far more damaging than any excesses attributed to the Nkrumah administration.
Lawyer Frimpong said Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day should be an opportunity for reflection on how Ghana and Africa can return to the foundational principles of self-determination, Pan-Africanism, and economic liberation that Nkrumah stood for. He urged Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to study Nkrumah’s writings and policies to appreciate the depth of his vision for a liberated and united Africa.
Lawyer Frimpong also called on African leaders to revive the agenda for continental unity and pursue policies that will make Africa truly independent and competitive globally.
