The Affordable Housing Board (AHB) has launched a 21-day roadshow across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado counties to provide residents with housing information and on-site registration assistance. The initiative, known as Boma Yangu, aims to facilitate account activation with a minimum Kes. 200 contribution and offers access to various housing typologies and regional development projects. This program is designed to educate residents about the available housing options and assist them in the registration process.
During the flag-off ceremony held in Nairobi, AHB Chief Executive Officer Joe Mutugu urged residents to visit the roadshow stops and engage directly with program officials. He stated that the campaign would showcase 63 projects comprising 107,960 housing units across social, affordable, and market housing categories. This will help residents understand the options suited to their needs and income. The CEO also highlighted that 35 projects with 76,478 units will be showcased in Nairobi and 28 projects with 31,482 units in the metropolitan counties.
The roadshow activations combine mobile sensitization activities with outreach in estates, markets, shopping malls, and transport hubs. Information desks and field teams will guide residents on the registration process, the housing options available, payment options, and referral of enquiries requiring further assistance to authorized officers. This approach aims to reach a wider audience and provide comprehensive information about the Affordable Housing Programme.
Nairobi County Commissioner Simon Osumba urged residents to visit the activation stops to learn about the Affordable Housing Programme. He encouraged Kenyans to take time to visit the various stop points during the 21-day activation period to learn more about the offerings and the process toward becoming a homeowner. Commissioner Osumba also encouraged civil servants and members of the disciplined forces to explore opportunities under the institutional and staff housing program.
There are about 26,190 units under construction nationally for the institutional and staff housing program, targeting teachers, security officers, and other public sector staff. This program aims to provide housing solutions for specific groups, enhancing their welfare and service delivery. The Affordable Housing Programme also creates job and enterprise opportunities, engaging skilled and semi-skilled workforce, including Jua Kali artisans and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Beyond homeownership, the Affordable Housing Programme has several benefits, including the creation of job and enterprise opportunities. The program engages a skilled and semi-skilled workforce, including Jua Kali artisans and MSMEs, in supplying materials and services. This has a positive impact on the local economy and helps to address the housing deficit. The CEO stated that they are on course to easing the annual 200,000 housing unit deficit once the 313,910 affordable housing units at different stages of completion across the county are released to the market.
Area residents along these counties and beyond are encouraged to participate in engaging the roadshow teams for information and assistance. Aside from the roadshows, any person looking to own a home can access the official Boma Yangu platform at www.bomayangu.go.ke or dial *832# for registration and the journey towards homeownership. The Affordable Housing Board aims to sensitize residents about the available housing options and facilitate their registration and participation in the program.
