Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State, Nigeria, has accused the state government of preventing the opposition party from mounting campaign billboards across the state. This allegation was made in a statement published on his Facebook account. The Kano State Government has previously regulated outdoor advertising and the display of political posters.
In June 2023, the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced a ban on indiscriminate outdoor advertising and poster pasting. They directed individuals and organisations to use approved billboards and electronic platforms for poster displays. However, it remains unclear whether the restriction alleged by Yakasai relates to a general regulatory policy or a specific decision affecting the ADC.
Expressing concern over the development, Yakasai said he had never imagined that what he described as the “kind of oppression” associated with the APC in some states could also occur in Kano. He alleged that the ADC was being denied the opportunity to use billboards to communicate its political message to residents of the state, a development he described as unjust.
The ADC chieftain also appealed to Governor Yusuf to reflect on the transient nature of political power, reminding him that authority is ultimately subject to the will of God. Yakasai invoked the uncertainty of political fortunes, warning that those who are in positions of authority today may themselves become subject to circumstances beyond their control tomorrow.
Yakasai further drew attention to Governor Yusuf’s political history, saying those whom the governor had previously accused of mistreating him were now under his authority. He appealed to political leaders to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could be perceived as an attempt to suppress opposing voices, stressing that positions of authority carry moral as well as political responsibilities.
The ADC member warned that the alleged injustice would not be overlooked, adding that political leaders should fear the wrath of God. Efforts to obtain the government’s reaction were unsuccessful, as the Director of Media and Publicity to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, was unavailable for comment as of press time.
The issue has sparked concerns about the level of democracy and freedom of expression in Kano State, particularly with regards to the activities of opposition parties. The development is significant, given that Kano is one of the largest states in Nigeria and a major hub for political activities in the country.
