Roseline Ada Chenge, an indigene of Owukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, has emerged as the candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) for the 2027 governorship election. Chenge, a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is set to challenge Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia. Her name appears on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) final list as the PRP candidate, with Emmanuel Gwaza listed as her running mate.

Chenge has previously pursued the Benue governorship ticket under the PDP, first contesting for the party’s nomination in 2007. She remained active in the state’s governorship race in subsequent election cycles. An engineer by profession, Chenge has been described as Northern Nigeria’s first female mechanical engineer. Her professional background and experience in public service make her a notable figure in Benue politics.

Chenge has held key public-sector positions, including Managing Director of the Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority and General Manager of the Benue State Water Board. During her time in public service, she was associated with efforts to improve water infrastructure, including the Greater Makurdi Water Works project. Her experience in managing critical infrastructure projects could be an asset in her governorship bid.

Beyond her professional career, Chenge has advocated for greater participation by women in Nigerian politics, highlighting the challenges female aspirants face in securing party support and competing against well-funded political opponents. Her emergence as the PRP candidate could pave the way for more women to participate in Benue politics.

Chenge is among the 12 candidates listed by INEC for the February 6, 2027, governorship election in Benue State. The election is expected to be a competitive one, with several candidates vying for the top seat. Chenge’s PRP candidacy adds to the growing list of aspirants challenging Governor Alia for the position.

Governor Alia, who has been in office since 2023, is seeking re-election for a second term. His administration has implemented several initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Benue residents. However, Chenge and other aspirants are presenting alternative visions for the state’s development, which could resonate with voters.

The 2027 Benue governorship election is expected to be a crucial one, with the state’s future development hanging in the balance. Chenge’s candidacy, along with that of other aspirants, will likely bring new ideas and perspectives to the electoral contest. The outcome of the election will determine the next leader of Benue State.
