A Homa Bay environmental activist, Abdul Omollo Masoud, has initiated a month-long tree-planting drive called the Mazingira Month for Raila. This campaign coincides with the first death anniversary of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15, 2025. Masoud began the campaign on October 1 by distributing free tree seedlings to residents of Homa Bay town. The initiative will run until October 31, with October 15 serving as its focal point.
Masoud is urging every Kenyan to plant at least two trees in October as a tribute to Raila and as a contribution to environmental conservation. He has set a target of over one million trees planted across the country before the end of October. Masoud emphasized the connection between tree planting and peace, stating that the campaign carries a social message alongside its environmental one.
The activist called on political and community leaders to lead by example, arguing that their participation would encourage wider public uptake of tree-planting practices. He urged all Kenyans, regardless of age or status, to plant a minimum of two trees during October to pay respect to Raila. Masoud's campaign aims to promote environmental conservation and encourage Kenyans to adopt a culture of tree planting.
Some residents of Homa Bay have rallied behind the initiative. Hassan Omondi and Felix Ongili, who received seedlings from Masoud, pledged to take part in the exercise. Ongili described Raila as a personal hero and said he would honour his memory through the campaign. The Mazingira Month for Raila forms part of a wider series of activities being organised ahead of the first anniversary of Raila's death.
Kenyans have also urged the government to make October 15 an annual public holiday in honour of Raila. There are plans to rename public facilities after him. Raila died aged 80 after collapsing during a morning walk in Kerala, India. His death prompted seven days of national mourning.
The proposed public holiday would make the anniversary an annual tribute to Raila. Masoud's campaign has gained support from residents, who believe that tree planting is a noble way to honour Raila's memory. The campaign aims to promote environmental conservation and encourage Kenyans to adopt a culture of tree planting.
The Mazingira Month for Raila campaign is expected to make a significant impact on the environment. With a target of over one million trees, the campaign has the potential to contribute to Kenya's environmental conservation efforts. The campaign's success will depend on the participation of Kenyans and leaders alike.
