Absa Group has appointed veteran banking executive Eric Muriuki as its new Managing Executive for Pan-African Growth Strategy, Platforms, and Digital Ventures. This strategic move aims to accelerate Absa's regional footprint and digital capability. Muriuki joins Absa after nearly two decades at NCBA Group, where he most recently served as Group Director of Digital Business and CEO of LOOP Digital Financial Services.

Muriuki's appointment reinforces Absa's strategic focus on expanding digital financial services, mobile banking platforms, and non-traditional payment channels across the continent. His track record in building scalable mobile-first products places him at the center of Absa's push to capture emerging digital banking opportunities throughout Africa. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Muriuki will oversee Absa's regional growth agenda, digital platforms, and new venture initiatives across its African markets.

Throughout his 19-year tenure at NCBA, Muriuki played an influential role in pioneering digital financial platforms that transformed mobile banking across East Africa. Notable achievements include helping design the original trust-account structure that enabled Safaricom to secure regulatory approval and issue electronic value for M-Pesa in 2007. He also led the creation of the mobile savings and micro-credit platform, M-Shwari, developed through a partnership between Commercial Bank of Africa and Safaricom in 2012.

Muriuki's experience covers mobile money, savings, digital credit, and other financial services delivered through mobile platforms. Prior to his time at NCBA, he served as a Business Change Manager at Co-operative Bank of Kenya and began his career as a Business Systems Manager at Citi. His academic and professional training has combined technology, business strategy, leadership, and financial services, with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Muriuki holds a Master of Business Administration in Strategy from Strathmore Business School and has completed executive leadership education programs at Harvard Business School and the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. His professional background and education have equipped him with the skills to drive Absa's digital growth strategy across Africa. Muriuki's appointment is a significant move to bolster Absa's digital capabilities and regional presence.

As CEO of LOOP Digital Financial Services, Muriuki led NCBA's digital-first banking unit targeted at modern consumers and entrepreneurs. He also contributed to the development of Kenya's leading mobile overdraft facility, Fuliza, in 2019. Muriuki's expertise in digital financial services will be crucial in driving Absa's growth strategy and expanding its digital footprint across Africa.

With Muriuki at the helm, Absa Group is poised to make significant strides in its digital growth strategy and regional expansion.
