The Abia State government has paid N502.1million as its counterpart funding for the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund. This fund will enable vulnerable residents to continue benefiting from the health insurance scheme for vulnerable persons. The state's Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Umuahia on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting. The meeting was presided over by State Governor, Alex Otti.
According to Prince Okey Kanu, the state's increasing investment in healthcare has attracted the attention and recognition of various stakeholders and development partners, particularly international organisations. A Swedish organisation has attracted specialised medical equipment to the state for trauma-related procedures, including orthopaedic, brain and spine surgeries. The state is establishing competency centres to address the healthcare needs of the people and raise the standard of its health systems.
The Abia Specialist Hospital in Umuahia has successfully performed emergency brain surgery on a 19-year-old accident victim. A team of neurologists performed the neurosurgical operation on the patient who was involved in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The patient was rushed to the hospital with a large collection of blood within his skull, requiring immediate neurosurgical intervention. The patient underwent a four-hour emergency surgery to remove the blood from his brain and control further bleeding.
The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, provided further details on the successful brain surgery. He explained that the 19-year-old patient was brought to the hospital in coma with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of six out of 15, which later dropped to five. The patient's condition was critical because massive bleeding into the brain was compressing the brainstem, making immediate surgery necessary.
Professor Uche noted that any attempt to refer the patient to another facility could have resulted in his death. He attributed the successful surgery to the state's facilities and brain surgeons employed by Governor Otti's administration. The Administrator, Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi, announced that the state had commemorated World Sight Day to raise awareness on eye health, good vision and the prevention of avoidable blindness.
This year's World Sight Day activities, themed "Safe Eyes, Safe Roads and Safe Lives," will run until October 15, 2026, and focus on promoting eye health and good vision. The activities include eye screening at various locations across the state and free eye screening for commercial drivers. The state government is also providing health interventions in communities affected by the recent flooding across the state to reduce health hazards and prevent possible disease outbreaks.
The state's investment in healthcare has led to significant improvements in the sector. The successful brain surgery and the state's participation in World Sight Day activities demonstrate the government's commitment to providing quality healthcare services to its citizens. Key initiatives include the counterpart fund for the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, the conduct of rare brain surgery at the state hospital, and free eye screening for commercial drivers as part of World Sight Day activities.
