The 66th anniversary of Nigeria's independence was marked in Abia State on a low-key level in Umuahia, the state capital. Governor Alex Chioma Otti led the celebration, which included a match past by a detachment of the Nigeria Police, Abia State Command, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium. In his broadcast to the people of the state, Governor Otti emphasized the need for collective effort towards achieving national development.

Governor Otti noted that though there are genuine grievances, frustrations should be channeled into finding solutions to the problems. He stressed that until solutions are found, things would continue to deteriorate. The governor urged the people of the state to accept that they are all stakeholders in the Nigerian project, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in resetting the national trajectory.

The governor asked Abians to embrace their duties of citizenship as true citizens and patriots. He noted that through this, the dreams of their parents who fought against colonial authorities can be actualized. Governor Otti also acknowledged the country's past challenges, including a civil war and multiple military incursions, but expressed hope for a better tomorrow.

Governor Otti requested Abians to join the conversation on national development, stressing that Nigeria's progress cannot be achieved by excluding themselves from important conversations. He noted that at 66, Nigeria has not fulfilled its nationhood objectives, but called on Nigerians to be hopeful for a better future.

The governor commended security agencies for their efforts in fighting insecurity and saluted workers across the country for their contributions. He also acknowledged the efforts of entrepreneurs, manufacturers, farmers, and artists in driving the country's economic realities.

Governor Otti emphasized that the pursuit of progress requires collective effort and that everyone must be prepared to put in the work. He noted that Nigeria's potential is not enough to turn things around and that the country needs the contributions of all its citizens.

The governor's message was one of hope and encouragement, urging Nigerians to take advantage of the democratic system to lead a direct push for accelerated national development. He emphasized that the country's future depends on the decisions made by its citizens every day and periodically when they vote to elect leaders.
