The management of Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology (ABSCOHMAT) in Aba, Nigeria, has announced plans to begin biogas production in October 2026. Okezie called on the Head of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology to research the feasibility of biogas production, which ultimately led to the development of the current project.
The biogas facility has the potential to generate approximately ₦100 million in income yearly for the institution, a significant achievement for the state. The project involves the use of three digesters capable of producing ₦300 million in one year. The institution plans to commercialize the gas production and possibly create a nearby public toilet to generate raw materials for biogas. This initiative also aims to promote a clean environment and combat open defecation.
The institution plans to present its biogas innovation at the forthcoming National Exhibition on Science and Research Projects, where it is expected to win an award. Okezie expressed confidence in the project's success and its potential to serve as a model for other institutions. The biogas production process involves the digestion of organic materials, which will be used to generate electricity, natural gas, and other forms of energy.
In addition to the biogas project, the institution is undergoing significant renovations, including the remodeling and retrofitting of hostels and lecture halls. Governor Otti has approved these projects, which aim to provide standard offices for staff and designate schools and departments within the institution. The senate lodge will be replaced with a more suitable hostel for students, enhancing the overall learning environment.
