The 8th semi-annual coordination meeting between the African Union and regional economic communities took place in El-Alamein, Egypt, with Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye highlighting the progress made in West African integration. As the current chair of ECOWAS, President Faye emphasized the community's commitment to placing citizens at the heart of the regional project. He presented the achievements in various areas, including economic integration, security, and infrastructure development.

One of the key projects mentioned by President Faye was the planned launch of the ECO single currency in 2027, as decided by the Heads of State. The biometric identity card of ECOWAS aims to facilitate the free movement of citizens within the region. Additionally, the interconnection of electricity networks in 15 countries is making progress, which will enhance energy security and cooperation among member states.

President Faye also stressed the need to strengthen collective security mechanisms in the face of terrorist threats. He emphasized the importance of continued dialogue with countries in the Sahel region, particularly those in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), to preserve regional ties and integration gains. This approach aims to promote peace, stability, and cooperation among West African nations.

On the economic front, President Faye advocated for a Continental African Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that benefits African economies, particularly through local resource transformation and the development of infrastructure corridors connecting different markets on the continent. He highlighted the importance of maximizing the potential of regional trade and investment to drive economic growth and development.

President Faye also commended Ghana and Togo for their efforts at the United Nations, where they championed the Declaration on the Trafficking of Africans and the "Correcting the Map" resolution on behalf of Africa. These initiatives demonstrate the commitment of ECOWAS member states to addressing global challenges and promoting African interests.

Under Senegal's presidency, ECOWAS aims to continue its efforts to unite the region and prioritize citizen-centered integration. The community is working to address various challenges, including security concerns, economic development, and infrastructure integration. By fostering cooperation and collaboration among member states, ECOWAS seeks to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in West Africa.

The 8th AU- ECOWAS meeting provided a platform for President Faye to engage with other African leaders and regional stakeholders on issues critical to the continent's development. The discussions focused on promoting regional integration, addressing common challenges, and exploring opportunities for cooperation and collaboration.
