The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Borno State Chapter has expressed concern over the prolonged captivity of 78 schoolchildren and other victims in the state. The association's chairman, Most Reverend John Bakeni, made the appeal during a prayer session held in Maiduguri as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the association. The event was a sober one, with many residents still grappling with insecurity and economic hardship.
According to Bakeni, the security situation in Borno had made it difficult for the Christian community to celebrate the milestone with the usual festivities. He noted that many residents were still facing challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship. The CAN chairman emphasized that the prevailing challenges would not weaken the resolve of the association and its members to pray for the return of peace and security.
The 78 schoolchildren were abducted in two separate incidents in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. On May 16, suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School, abducting 42 students and pupils. Another 36 students and a teacher were reportedly abducted on June 29 when suspected Boko Haram terrorists invaded Government Day Secondary School, Lassa.
Bakeni said the prayer session was specifically organised to seek divine intervention on behalf of the country, Borno State, and those being held captive. The session also included prayers for the forthcoming election. He explained that CAN had also been engaging political and security authorities through advocacy, particularly on the need to secure the release of the abducted victims.
The CAN chairman urged authorities to consider the ordeal from the perspective of the affected parents, who have been under enormous emotional burden for over 100 days. He appealed to the government and security agencies to intensify operations aimed at securing the immediate release of those still in captivity. Bakeni emphasized that it was a responsibility that rested on their shoulders.
Bakeni noted that as people of faith, they always give God thanks even in the midst of challenges. He believed that God would answer their prayers. The CAN chairman said the association would continue to pray for the return of peace and security in the state. He also encouraged the government and security agencies to do whatever it takes to rescue the abducted victims.
