As winter approaches, residents of Béjaïa province in Algeria, particularly those living in mountainous areas, are concerned about heating their homes. Many localities lack access to natural gas, and although Naftal is working to ensure a sufficient supply of butane gas cylinders, a new program aims to bring relief to these families. The program involves connecting 7,000 households to natural gas across various communes by November.

The announcement was made by the Wali of Béjaïa, Ahmed Maabed, during a ceremony in the municipality of Tinebdar, where he launched the natural gas service for 748 households. The program is expected to increase the natural gas penetration rate in Béjaïa province to 62%. The Wali attributed the lower-than-expected rate to opposition from citizens, which has hindered the implementation of some projects.

In March, local authorities successfully completed the rehabilitation of the 20-inch Beni Mansour-Béjaïa gas pipeline and the 8-inch Melbou-Ziama Mansouria pipeline, following a lengthy sensitization effort. These projects had been stalled for several years due to opposition from landowners. The connection of thousands of households in eastern Béjaïa province depends on the completion of these pipelines.

The communes of Souk El Tenine, Melbou, Tamridjt, Taskeriout, Derguina, Bordj Mira, and Aït Smaïl are expected to benefit from the new connections. Additionally, communes in western Béjaïa province, such as Béni Ksila, Adekar, and Taourirt Ighil, will also be connected to natural gas once the 16-inch pipeline project, starting from Fréha, is implemented.

The natural gas program is a significant development for the region, providing a more reliable and efficient heating solution for residents. The authorities have been working to address the concerns of citizens and landowners, ensuring that the projects are completed smoothly and safely.

The Wali's announcement has brought hope to families who have been relying on butane gas cylinders for heating. The new connections will not only improve the quality of life for residents but also contribute to the province's economic development. The authorities are expected to continue working on the implementation of the program, ensuring that the deadline is met.

The connection of 7,000 households to natural gas is a major milestone in Béjaïa province, and the authorities are committed to continuing the development of the region's infrastructure. The program is expected to have a positive impact on the environment, as natural gas is a cleaner-burning fuel than butane.
