Thirty-nine students from Western Equatoria State have begun their journey to Aweil in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State to pursue their secondary education under the Adut Salva Kiir scholarship program. The group consists of 18 boys and 21 girls who were selected based on their academic performance and social vulnerability. The scholarship program prioritizes vulnerable students and children of veterans, aiming to provide educational opportunities to those facing financial and social difficulties.

The Adut Salva Kiir Scholarship Programme is being implemented in Western Equatoria under the leadership of Caretaker Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa. The program's chairperson, Kubako Emmanuel, who is also the Deputy Director for Examination and Assessment at the State Ministry of General Education and Instruction, explained that vulnerability and academic performance were key criteria in selecting the students. Students who completed Primary Eight with Distinction or Credit were considered, particularly those from families unable to afford secondary education.

The selection process for the scholarship program took into account students who had completed Primary Eight with Distinction or Credit. Emmanuel emphasized that those from families unable to afford secondary education were given priority. The scholarship program aims to support students who face financial and social difficulties in accessing secondary education. By providing educational opportunities, the program seeks to empower students to complete their secondary education and potentially access higher education in the future.

Due to the poor condition of roads in Western Equatoria, some students were airlifted to Aweil, while others were transported through Juba. Emmanuel cited the road situation as a major challenge, stating that it was not possible to transport the students by road. The use of air transport was made possible with the support of His Excellency, highlighting the importance of partnerships in facilitating educational opportunities for vulnerable students.

The students are expected to continue their secondary education from Senior One to Senior Four under the scholarship program. This initiative provides an opportunity for the selected beneficiaries to access quality education outside their state. However, the program also underscores the broader need for increased investment in secondary schools, scholarships, and education infrastructure within Western Equatoria to enable more students to access and complete secondary education.

The Adut Salva Kiir Scholarship Programme is a significant initiative aimed at addressing the challenges facing families seeking to keep their children in school beyond primary education. The cost of school fees, learning materials, accommodation, and transport can make secondary education difficult for vulnerable families. By providing scholarships, the program seeks to alleviate some of these financial burdens and enable students to focus on their education.

The departure of the 39 students has provided an opportunity for the selected beneficiaries to continue their education outside the state. The scholarship program highlights the importance of investing in education infrastructure and increasing access to secondary education in Western Equatoria. As the students begin their educational journey in Aweil, the program's impact on their lives and the broader community will be closely watched.
