Three people were killed and eight others injured in two separate attacks in Plateau State on Sunday night. The attacks occurred in Jos South and Bokkos Local Government Areas. According to reports, the first attack happened at about 11pm at Angwan Tsarki, a settlement in Mangor, Bokkos, where gunmen opened fire on members of a local neighbourhood watch group. Two vigilantes were killed and three others injured in the attack.

The second incident occurred when gunmen opened fire on a vehicle conveying traders returning from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South. One person was killed and seven others injured in the attack. The victim was identified as Musa Abubakar. The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the attack on traders returning from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market. A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said the incident occurred at about 4:30pm on Sunday.

The police command said the seven injured victims were taken to the Military Clinic, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, where they were receiving medical attention. The Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Investigations to take full charge of the investigation and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted. The command strongly condemned the attack and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.

The police command mobilized tactical and anti-robbery teams to beef up security around the area, while intelligence gathering was intensified to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Residents were advised to go about their lawful businesses and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies. The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) also confirmed the attack.

MACBAN said the man killed in the incident was a Fulani herdsman. The association called on security agencies to investigate the attack thoroughly and bring those responsible to justice. In a statement signed by its chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the association described the incident as disturbing, saying the victims were returning from their lawful business activities when they were attacked.

Babayo recalled that five herders were killed on September 20, 2026, around Kassa in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area while returning from the same Kara Bukuru Livestock Market. He also recalled that herders were attacked near the Conoil Filling Station in December last year while returning from the market. The recurrence of the attacks had created fear and insecurity among pastoralists and traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.

Babayo called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen security along the Kara Bukuru market route and take decisive steps to prevent further attacks. He stressed that no Nigerian should be attacked or killed because of his or her ethnic background or occupation. Babayo also appealed to members of the association to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid any form of retaliation.
