The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Business Management Class of 1997 recently held its first reunion in Abuja, marking 29 years since graduation. During the event, members emphasised the need to support young entrepreneurs and provide them with necessary assistance to contribute to economic growth. They also agreed to constitute an investment committee to pursue their goals ahead of their proposed 30th anniversary in 2027.

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Babangida Nguroje, attended the reunion and urged his former coursemates to deploy their professional expertise to strengthen the nation’s economy. He encouraged them to give back to their university and groom upcoming entrepreneurs through training and other opportunities for growth. Nguroje emphasised the need to boost Nigeria’s economy through investments that create jobs for the teeming youth population.

Nguroje highlighted the importance of the reunion, which brought together former students who have developed in their individual capacities and areas of interest. He noted that the country needs their expertise as students of figures, data, and research. The reunion provided an opportunity for members to catch up and discuss matters that would leave a positive impact on their university.

One of the organisers of the reunion, Mrs Julianna Aiwerioghene, stated that the Class of ’97 would take the issue of empowerment seriously. As managers, members are interested in grooming younger business owners to attain their full potential. They plan to harness the capabilities of younger entrepreneurs and help them build themselves through training and other forms of support.

Aiwerioghene further explained that the class wants to see a productive generation among the younger ones. They will subsequently look at helping one another and continually explore ways to remain united and grow together. Progress is something they take seriously, and they will also not forget their university in the process.

The reunion aimed to make the gathering an annual event and determine how best to lift those in need and create opportunities for all members. Members discussed ways to identify areas where they can assist their university, particularly their department. They also explored ways to make a positive impact on their alma mater.

The UNIMAID Business Management Class of 1997 has taken a significant step towards reuniting and giving back to their community. With their plans for intervention programmes and investment committee, they aim to make a lasting impact on young entrepreneurs and the nation’s economy.
