Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Abdelaziz Qanswa, chaired a meeting of the Supreme Council of Universities at the University of Minya. The council discussed various initiatives to improve the quality of education and research in Egyptian universities. Qanswa emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and regularity in the educational process across all universities and institutes. He also stressed the need to provide a stable and stimulating learning environment for students.
Qanswa highlighted the significance of implementing student activity plans during the new academic year in cultural, artistic, sports, and social fields. These activities are essential in building students' personalities, discovering talents, and developing capabilities. The minister also emphasized the importance of providing a comprehensive system to support innovators and young people. This system includes financing graduation projects and innovative ideas, as well as technology incubators and business accelerators.
The minister stressed the need to maximize the societal impact of scientific research outputs and link research to community and industry needs. He also emphasized the importance of supporting and financing serious research projects to achieve a tangible return on society and support the knowledge-based economy. Qanswa announced that 27 Egyptian universities were ranked in the 2026 Shanghai subject rankings, an increase from 25 universities in 2025.
The minister also revealed that 47 Egyptian universities were included in the 2026 UI GreenMetric sustainability rankings, up from 38 universities in 2025. He praised the achievements of Egyptian universities in international rankings and urged continued support for researchers and increased scientific publishing in reputable journals. This support will help improve the rankings of Egyptian universities in international rankings.
The Supreme Council of Universities also reviewed the efforts of the committee formed to prepare a comprehensive vision for the initiative to care for innovators and talented individuals in Egyptian higher education institutions. The council discussed reports from universities on research outputs, innovations, and patents, as well as ways to convert research results into practical applications.
The council reviewed a report from Benha University, which included 488 published research papers and 14 innovative projects. The report identified priority areas for cooperation, including water and energy, smart production lines, and smart agriculture and food security. The council also discussed reports from other universities, including Mansoura, Sohag, Luxor, and Beni Suef.
The meeting also covered efforts by universities to update their development plans, enhancing governance and competitiveness in higher education institutions. University leaders presented their achievements and partnerships in scientific research, innovation, and digital transformation. The council's discussions aimed to promote the quality of education and research in Egyptian universities.
