The Games Village for the 23rd National Sports Festival is scheduled to open on November 25 and 26, ahead of the official commencement of the sporting event in Enugu state. The Secretary-General of the Local Organising Committee, Bamiduro Olumide, disclosed this as preparations intensify for the national sporting event expected to bring together athletes and officials from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a statement issued by the LOC, the opening ceremony will take place on November 27, 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, marking the formal commencement of the festival. The Games are scheduled to run until December 11, while the Games Village is expected to close on December 12, 2026. This arrangement provides a two-day window for participating contingents to arrive, settle into accommodation, and complete necessary preparations before the opening ceremony.
Enugu state is stepping up organisational arrangements for the festival, with the LOC recently constituting specialised sub-committees to coordinate different aspects of the event. The committees are expected to handle Games Village management, accommodation, catering, security, transportation, media and communication, protocol, ceremonies, venues, finance, marketing, volunteers, medical services, and athletes’ welfare.
The National Sports Commission had earlier confirmed November 27 to December 11 as the dates for the 2026 National Sports Festival following consultations between the Commission and the Enugu State Government. NSC Director-General, Bukola Olopade, announced the schedule during the first Main Organising Committee meeting in Abuja. He said the arrival of participating states would take place between November 25 and 26, with the opening ceremony following on November 27.
One of the notable changes for the 2026 edition is the reduction of the number of sports to 20 under the NSC’s reform agenda. According to the Commission’s earlier announcement, 15 sports will be compulsory, while Enugu, as host state, will select five additional events. The adjustment is intended to make hosting the festival more manageable for participating states and the organisers, while retaining a broad range of competitive opportunities.
The readiness of sporting venues, accommodation, transportation, and other supporting infrastructure will be critical to the successful delivery of the festival. During an inspection exercise in August, the NSC and Enugu State officials assessed major facilities and logistical arrangements ahead of the competition. The exercise covered training venues, accommodation, transportation, and other operational requirements.
The festival is expected to create opportunities for tourism, hospitality, transportation, commerce, and other service sectors in Enugu. The influx of athletes, officials, sports administrators, supporters, and visitors could generate increased demand for accommodation, food, transportation, and local businesses during the festival. The NSC has also linked the event to its broader objective of identifying and developing sporting talent, particularly among young Nigerians who could progress to national and international competitions.
