President Bola Tinubu and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State have emphasized the need for the Nigeria Police to maintain the highest sense of professionalism during the 2027 general election. They made this call at the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, where the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, also addressed the officers. The event, themed “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections,” drew high-ranking officials from the police and other security agencies.
The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, charged the officers to remain neutral, prepared, present, and accountable during the elections. He stressed the importance of upholding the highest standards of professionalism and impartiality. The retreat brought together Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police, as well as heads of other security agencies, including the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and Department of State Security.
President Tinubu, represented by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, highlighted the police's central role in protecting voters, electoral officials, candidates, and election materials. He urged the force to leverage technology, improve response times, and enhance cooperation with other security agencies. Tinubu assured the police of continued federal government support for reforms, training, technology, welfare, and operational logistics.
Governor Uzodimma, as the host, also emphasized the need for the police to strengthen intelligence-led policing, adopt digital technology, and improve inter-agency coordination ahead of the 2027 elections. He noted that the changing information environment, misinformation, and digital manipulation had created new challenges for election security. Uzodimma stressed the importance of police neutrality and public trust, advocating for decentralized policing and state police.
Uzodimma called for a practical roadmap that would ensure early threat detection, effective intelligence-sharing, and coordinated responses while protecting the electoral process without compromising police professionalism and impartiality. He spoke strongly against any police behavior that could deter the electorate from exercising their civic responsibility. The governor acknowledged the need to address recruitment, funding, training, accountability, and safeguards against political abuse.
