Senator representing Kano South, Abdul'Rahman Kawu Sumaila, has expressed concern over the use of thuggery and illicit drugs in electioneering campaigns, saying the practice does not augur well for democracy and the nation. He made the remarks while presenting his Scorecard to the media at a Forum organised by the Kano Correspondents' Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) in partnership with his office. The event was tagged: “One-On-One With Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD: Reviewing The 2023 Kano South Campaign Promises Ahead of 2027.”

Senator Sumaila stated that he would not indulge in the use of weapons or encourage drug abuse during his political activities, unlike some other politicians. He believes his constituents would vote for him for a second term in the Senate based on his current performance. The lawmaker described the use of thuggery as inimical to democracy and the development of the country. He advised Nigerians to vote for candidates that have the capacity to deliver dividends of democracy to them, and not based on their physical appearance.

The Senator highlighted his achievements, which include the execution of 103 projects and interventions across the senatorial zone. Some of the projects include the sinking of 6,090 tube wells on farmers’ own plots across the 16 local government areas of the zone. He also mentioned the revival of three dams at Tiga, Challawa and Kafin Chiri. Additionally, he has awarded scholarships to 1,082 students studying in various institutions of higher learning under the Waraka Initiative.

Senator Sumaila also empowered traders, artisans, women and farmers with tools, vehicles, sewing machines and cash. He urged the people of Kano South Senatorial District to vote for him for a second term during the forthcoming national assembly elections. This, he said, would enable him to consolidate the giant strides he had recorded in the zone in the last three years.

The Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, said the event was designed to hold Senator Sumaila accountable for his stewardship. He noted that Section 22 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), places a responsibility on the mass media to hold government accountable to the people. Adewale asked how far Senator Sumaila had fulfilled the promises he made in 2023 and what he had achieved for the people of Kano South during his first three years in the National Assembly.

Adewale also inquired why the people of Kano South should consider entrusting Senator Sumaila with another term based on his legislative experience and contributions in the Red Chamber. He thanked Senator Sumaila for agreeing to account for his stewardship and hoped that other elected political office holders would borrow a leaf from his example.

Senator Sumaila's Scorecard presentation is a testament to his commitment to transparency and accountability. As the 2027 general elections approach, Nigerians will be keen to see which candidates can deliver on their campaign promises. Senator Sumaila's achievements in Kano South will likely be an important factor in the electorate's decision-making process.
