The Nigeria Police Force has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other ad hoc personnel engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of adequate protection during the 2027 general elections. This assurance comes amid concerns over the recent abduction of corps members in parts of the country. The police have conducted an extensive threat assessment and are strengthening security arrangements to protect electoral personnel before, during, and after the polls.

Police spokesman Ani Iniedu gave the assurance during a joint security briefing organised by security and intelligence agencies at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja. Iniedu stated that the police are working closely with INEC and other security agencies to ensure the safety of corps members and other temporary electoral workers. The police have a history of engaging with stakeholders to provide security for ad hoc personnel, as seen during the Osun State election.

According to Iniedu, the police have identified potential threats to soft targets during election cycles. However, the police are adequately preparing for the challenges and are increasing deployments ahead of the elections. The Inspector-General of Police has directed the immediate distribution of operational equipment and logistics to enhance security.

The police spokesman reassured corps members and other young Nigerians participating in the electoral process that their safety remains a priority for the police. He added that the police will do everything within their capacity to ensure that those assisting in the democratic process are adequately protected.

Iniedu also warned political actors against hate speech, incitement, and other forms of political violence capable of undermining the electoral process. He disclosed that the police have documented 11 reported cases of hate speech and have taken actions in response to them. The Inspector-General of Police has directed all Commissioners of Police to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in such offences.

The police have established complaint channels through which members of the public can report Commissioners of Police who fail to take appropriate action against offenders. This move aims to ensure that offenders are brought to justice and that the electoral process is protected from violence.

The Nigeria Police Force's assurance of protection for corps members and INEC ad hoc staff aims to alleviate concerns and ensure a safe and successful electoral process. The police's efforts to engage with stakeholders, increase deployments, and provide operational equipment and logistics demonstrate their commitment to protecting those involved in the democratic process.
